Exabees’ Daunting Yet Enjoyable Moments at Allianz Penang Bridge International Marathon (Part 2)

November 30th, 2012

(Continued from Part 1)

Date: 18 November 2012
Venue: Penang Brige

Helping some of the runners to pour water / 100 Plus into their own bottles for later consumption, all of a sudden we heard a groan of pain from a female runner who got a cramp in her leg. Luckily the St John team was just 200m away. We ran as fast as we could to enlist their help, and were extremely relieved to see that her pain was easing away. Continue to work non-stop, we were exhausted serving drinks to runners who arrived relentlessly.

It wasn’t until 4.00am that we had a chance to munch on our snacks and replenish ourselves with some water. After a brief rest, we began packing our stuff as well as picking up the cups and bottles scattered on the bridge. Our next destination was set – we were heading to Raja Uda, Butterworth to reward ourselves with the steamy and delicious Dim Sum! The Penang Bridge later reopened at 10.00am and traffic was returned to normal.

The official results were out and made available on the APBIM website soon. After a sound and uninterrupted sleep, we woke up to check the much anticipated results and indeed, it was the group of speedy runners from Kenya who grabbed the first few places. Recalling the moments we saw them last night at water station 7, all of us were stunned by their lightning-like running speed, although our station was a whopping 21kms from the starting point!

The champion of full marathon had successfully covered 42.195kms at an impressive 2 hours and 31 minutes record, an average distance of 280m in a minute!

Once again, congratulations to all the runners for completing the race. Thank you to the Penang Bridge International Marathon committee for organizing this wonderful event. Last but not least, we wish to pat all Exabees on the back for successfully completing another challenging feat! Way to go, Exabess!

Exabees’ Daunting Yet Enjoyable Moments at Allianz Penang Bridge International Marathon

November 23rd, 2012

Date: 18 November 2012
Venue: Penang Brige

Allianz Penang Bridge International Marathon also known as APBIM, is an annual international sport event that attracts thousands of serious runners as well as amateurs from both local and international grounds each year. Since 1985, sportsmen from all over the world have come to participate in the thrilling run across the third longest bridge in the world, The Penang Bridge that oversees the breathtaking panoramic view of the “Pearl of the Orient”. This year’s APBIM was especially unique as it featured LIVE Race Tracking with Facebook and Twitter and recorded a very high number of registrations – 34,000!! At the same time, Exabees were absolutely excited to be a part of this as the event partner and volunteers at the scene.

In the month of November, 7 is our lucky number. It was also the water station we Exabees were at in last weekend’s Allianz Penang Bridge International Marathon 2012! Giving out drinks and cheering for our tireless runners were a much cherished and memorable experience for us, not to mention that this was the last marathon to be held on the The Penang Bridge (next year’s event venue will be the newly built second link). As the partner and volunteers of the event, Exabees arrived at Sunday’s 12.30am midnight to get everything ready including manning the registration booth. We were very glad and grateful that some spouses of Exabees had also volunteered themselves for this endeavor. To our delight, the sky was clear and there wasn’t any sign of raining. Picking up our belongings after a simple group photo taking session, we wanted to be the first few ones to experience the ‘run’ before the runners arrived. However, it was a whopping 2.5km-distance from the place we gathered to water station 7!

Water station 7 was to only serve full marathon runners, who must cover a total of 42kms to finish the race. Our team was given 3000 bottles of 500ml mineral water, 300 bottles of 1500ml 100 Plus and 6000 empty cups to serve over 3000 of them. The task of pouring drinks into cups and arranging them on the tables seemed easy, but it was more daunting than we had thought. Keen believers that one should always incorporate creativity into his job no matter how challenging it is, we had prepared some musical instruments to cheer up our runners and ourselves, including portable speakers, empty 100 plus bottles, whistles, some mini bells, etc. Standing next to us at our station offering assistance were the very helpful scouts. At the same time, to make sure we were energetic throughout the night, we decided to pamper ourselves a little by bringing along a variety of snacks such as McDonald’s, Kit Kat, Snicker, etc.

After tying the huge banners indicating the distance covered at our station, the leader of the mission, Chun Howe waved the flag of Penang to boost up our spirit and show the support to the runners. Sooner than we thought, the first 5 runners appeared and surprised us with their lightning-like running speed. Grabbing their drinks the marathon runner kind of way, they accidentally toppled other cups on the table and caused other drinks to splash all over the place. This prompted us to reconsider the way we arranged our drinks on the table.

Suddenly, the empty Penang Bridge was buzzing with activities. Runners had arrived in batches incessantly. As we were busy pouring the drinks non-stop, our funny bones were tickled by a creative runner who dressed in a banana costume! Some were also seen pouring down their drinks onto their heads to prevent their bodies from overheating.

Stay tuned. More exciting details to come!

A Memorable Visit to Aquaria KLCC with the Indigenous Kids from Sg. Lallang, Semenyih

October 4th, 2012

Time passes like lightning and we are now in the month of September. Looking back, there was a very meaningful trip in August in which Exabees and the adorable indigenous kids (orang asli) from the rural village of Semenyih visited KLCC Aquaria, a state-of-the-art oceanarium showcasing over 5000 different exhibits of aquatic and land-bound creatures.

Thanks to CEO Chan for fully sponsoring the fun-filled day trip, and the Church of Holy Family, Kajang for organizing this event, so that the children and Exabees had the chance to get to know each other while interacting with the marine life / live reptiles and discover these amazing creatures. Headed by Lynn, one of the volunteers from the church, 8 of us together with 37 very eager children gathered at the entrance of Aquaria KLCC at 11am before checking in for an exciting trip.

The whole experience was an eye opener for the kids, as it was the first time for quite a number of them to set foot in KL, let alone a huge indoor oceanarium. Besides watching the beautiful marine creatures with their own eyes, in the aquaria, visitors were allowed to extend their hands into the pond and have physical contact with them.

We were thrilled to see how excited and happy the kids were when touching the living fish with their own hands.

Next, we were on to see various underwater species swimming around in giant fish tanks; some of them had the size bigger than an adult human.

In addition, the charming children were also shown by the aquaria’s personnel how sea creatures such as turtles and some giant fish were fed and they were truly intrigued by that. Towards the end of the trip, we watched “a giant TV” which showed the picture of life under the sea, only this time it was not an image projected by a TV.

Seats were also made available to those who wish to sit down and observe the creatures for a longer time.

And certainly, we wouldn’t want the children to go back with an empty stomach. Still sitting and watching the “ocean giant TV”, the kids were treated to the delicious McDonald’s meals.

Once again, a thousand thanks to CEO Chan and members of the Church of Holy Family, Kajang for making this trip a very cherished and memorable experience.
